The objective of this course, over four weeks and within the context of the energy transition and sustainable mobility, is to understand the technical concepts and environmental issues related to the automotive industry.

This MOOC is intended either for students or professionals interested in energy and the automotive sector. More broadly, it is intended for those willing to gain knowledge about electrical drivetrain, hybrids, autonomous driving and the new forms of mobility, who are convinced that climate change is really a challenge that can also be sustained through concrete solutions regarding mobility.

    After successfully completing this course, participants will be able to: 

    1. Identify the world's energy context and its evolution, the evolution of the energy demand and the energy transition issues as a way to meet sustainability in development.
    2. Explain the current transport situation regarding pollutant emissions and legislation.
    3. Design an electric drivetrain taking into account the electric engine, the electronics, the type of battery and control system by finding the right trade-off between performances and the constraints of weight and price.
    4. Design a hybrid powertrain taking into account the hybridization degree and the different architectures.

    6. Understand autonomous and connected vehicle technologies, what it is and how does it work. Deduce the impact of these new technologies on society and the limiting factors.

    You will explore the international energy scene and the energy transition issues. You will also discover the transport sector and the environmental regulations that drive technological developments in the automotive sector.

    After understanding the limitations of electric vehicles today before and why they are not yet massively used, you will explore hybrid vehicles: what it is, how does it work, the different degrees of hybridization and how the energy is performed depending on the functionalities.

  • Week 4
    Week 4

    In this last week, you will be introduced to connected and autonomous vehicles and how they work. You will learn the 5 levels of autonomy, the key technologies, how these new technologies will modify the way we travel and the constraints to their development.

    This week is developed in collaboration with Vedecom.

Arash FARNOOSH (PhD) holds the Chair of “Electricity Economics & Digital Transition” at IFP School. Currently he teaches courses on energy economics, natural gas and electricity management and techno-economics of renewable energies at IFP School. Moreover, he supervises a Master’s program in Petroleum Economics and an Executive Master in Energy Management. Previously he worked in various entities such as Airbus France, Total E&P and BNP Paribas Investment Banking group as a techno-economic engineer and analyst.

Sébastien Bianchi is the Program Supervisor of the Master in Energy and Markets and, in particular, he is specialized in energy economics and finance. He began his career as a consultant in finance. He continued his career in change management and was then responsible for management on several projects. In addition, he specialized in cost controls. In 2013 he joined IFP School as a lecturer in the Centre for Energy Economics and Management, where he teaches financial analysis and management control.

Sidney Lambert-Lalitte is a lecturer specialized in economics and the environment and, in particular, in the tools used to reduce greenhouse gases emissions (carbon markets, environmental tax systems…). His main areas of study are energy & climate economics and also business models in the renewable energy sector.

Guillermo Ballesteros
Expert, consultant and trainer at IFP Training and associated professor at IFP School, Guillermo Ballesteros is specialized in conventional, hybrid and electric powertrains. He has a 20 years’ experience as a senior executive in the automotive industry (Renault group, 1991-2012) and worked on electric, hybrid, conventional vehicles and powertains developements. He is now the program supervisor of the « Mastère Spécialisé Groupes Moto Propulseurs Hybrides et Electriques » (Executive « Mastère » on Hybrids and Electric Powertains).

Nadège Faul
has a 24 years’ experience as a senior executive in the automotive industry (PSA group, 1993-2014), in international distribution, dealer network management, and customer service development. In 2011, she created the new mobility services division for PSA group and managed the strategic platform that ended up with the creation of the Connected Services and New mobility Business Unit in 2014. She then joined VEDECOM as Project Manager, where she is leading research projects on new mobility services based on automated vehicles.

Research fellow in economics and sustainable development, VEDECOM Institute After 10 years as project manager in local authorities, Rémy LE BOENNEC obtained a PhD in environmental economics. As his research interests lie at the connection between urban forms and mobility issues, he studied the crossed interactions between these latter. He is currently working at the VEDECOM Institute, studying the brakes and levers in favor of modal shift towards sustainable forms of mobility (public transport, carpooling, car-sharing, active modes) in every type of territories.

Ludivine Pidol
Ludivine Pidol holds a PhD in Chemistry. She is a professor in the Centre of IC Engine and Hydrocarbon Utilizations. She coordinates several teaching units within various programs such as Powertrain Engineering. She also gives lessons on Motor Fuels and Lubricants. Her research experience focuses on matching Engines and Fuels in the field of Biodiesel and Biokerosene.
